Doctor’s Buggy

Here is a 1/12 scale model of a typical doctor’s buggy from the late 1800s. This style of carriage, the phaeton, featured a minimal very lightly sprung body atop four large wheels. They were fast, agile and somewhat dangerous. This carriage model started as a wood and metal kit to which I made many changes and added many additional details. I scratch-built the complete top assembly from brass and cloth. The horse was purchased separately but came with molded mane and tail. I removed those, added appropriate new hair, and airbrushed my horse with new colors. I built the complete harness system from leather that was skived down to .02 inch thickness. I made the doctor bag seen on the seat from thin painted ultrasuede. It has a metal frame at the top and really opens. The next thing people usually ask is if I put medical supplies in the bag. Nope, I didn’t.
